Americano padel tournament

Americano is a social padel tournament format where players compete individually while partners rotate every round. It’s one of the fastest ways to run a fun event, mix skill levels, and keep everyone playing.

Rules & how it works

  • Players register individually; they accumulate points as individuals.
  • Each round, players are paired into temporary teams (two players per team) and face another team.
  • Partners rotate each round so everyone plays with (and against) many different players.
  • Matches are usually played to a fixed number of points (common choices: 16, 20, 24, 32).
  • If you have more players than fit on courts, a fair bench rotation is used each round.
  • At the end, the player with the most total points (and/or best tie-breakers) wins.

How matches are generated

1. Round 1 Setup: All players are shuffled randomly. Players are grouped into sets of 4 and assigned to courts. If there are more players than can fit on available courts, remaining players sit out (bye) with fair rotation.

2. Partner History Tracking: The system maintains a "partner history" map for each player, recording who they have already partnered with across all previous rounds.

3. Next Round Generation: When generating a new round, the algorithm prioritizes players with fewer past partners. For each match, it selects 4 players ensuring no two players who have already partnered are placed on the same team.

4. Partner Selection Logic: The first player is chosen from those with the fewest total partners. The second player must NOT have partnered with the first player before. The third and fourth players follow the same rule for team B.

5. Tournament Completion: The tournament completes when every player has partnered with every other player at least once. With n players, this requires (n-1) rounds where each player partners with a different person each round.

6. Sit-out (Bye) Management: Players who cannot fit on courts sit out for that round. The algorithm tracks sit-outs to ensure fair rotation across rounds.

Origin

Americano became widely popular in racket sports communities as a "rotation" format designed for social mixing.

In padel clubs, it’s often used for weekly socials, corporate events, and "meet the members" sessions because the structure is simple and repeatable.

Popularity

Very popular in padel clubs across Europe and Latin America because it’s easy to explain and runs smoothly with limited courts.

Ideal for mixed-skill groups: strong players still compete, and beginners get more touches and variety of partners.

Organizer tips

  • Decide a target score and round duration (e.g. 20 points or 15 minutes).
  • Use clear tie-breakers: total points → number of wins → head-to-head (if applicable).
  • Aim for player counts that are multiples of 4, but support benching if needed.

FAQ

How many players do you need for an Americano?

You need at least 4 players. The format works best with 8, 12, 16… but you can run it with any number by rotating benches fairly.

Is Americano better than Round Robin for a one-night event?

Often yes—Americano is faster to organize and keeps partner/opponent variety high without needing a full pair-vs-pair schedule.
